Good evening. I am here to voice my concern and provide some information
on coyote attacks. On July 27th, I sent a flyer to each of my neighbors in
the Arcadia Gardens area, east of the Race Track, north of Colorado Blvd,
bordered on Santa Anita on the east and Huntington Drive on the south.
Although I know that the coyote attacks are also prevalent on the college
streets (Stanford, Oxford, etc.), I was trying to assess the nature of the
attacks in my immediate neighborhood. Most of these attacks have been in
gated or fenced back yard areas.
These are the preliminary results of my study:
300 block Santa Rosa Rd (July 8, 2010, July 11, 31 coyote in fenced
back yard)
On July 8th, little dog Lucy was viciously attacked in their backyard (on Santa Rosa) by a coyote that jumped their block wall from the wash. After 20 stitches in her neck, she survived. Just a week later, the coyote was seen on their back wall at dusk, lying in wait.
Last Saturday night (July 31, 2010) at 11:30, they took their dog out on a
leash in their backyard and rattled a can filled with coins. The coyote
jumped out of their backyard bushes and leapt over their fence.

In early July, we found the remains of a calico cat on our neighbor's
front yard. It was our neighbor's cat.
Another neighbor's cat was also reported missing the following week.
700 block San Luis Rey. Cat disappeared, no evidence. July 24,
2010.
300 block San Luis Rey Dog attacked and killed in their back yard. late May 2010
600 block Santa Maria (6/13/2010) 30 lb. Terrier mix, 13 years old, attacked at 8:30AM in the back yard; whole side ripped open, neighbors heard coyote and scared it off. Dog was still alive and died at the vet's office.
400 block Santa Cruz Accosted a coyote in their back yard, the day after they heard that a neighbor's beloved Chihuahua next door had been brutally killed in their back yard. A week later, the coyote continues to return to their backyard
and stalks their dog. Also seen on their block wall periodically.
Santa Cruz My family and I live on Santa Cruz Rd. and our backyard faces Santa Rosa. On Sunday night (July 25th), a coyote was on the other side of our back
fence getting ready to jump over. I immediately made loud noises and he
ran away. On August 1st, my son-in-law was relaxing in our backyard and
saw the coyote on the other side of the fence, again. He threw a tennis
ball at the fence and the coyote gnarled at him before dashing away.
Something has to be done about this. I doubt this is the last time we will
see him...
400 block Santa Cruz Beloved Chihuahua brutally attacked. Only the legs of the dog remained.
San Miguel After the fires in August 2009, a coyote attacked and killed their pet
bunnies in their back yard.
100 block San Miguel At 9:00 PM on July 8, 2010, I heard our poodle Mikey barking twice at the door. I told him just to wait for Ed the owner. He does not want Mikey to be inside if it is still early. The yard is gated. I did not hear any
struggle or anything unusual. The owner tried to look for Mikey that
night but to no avail. The following day they found out that there was a
coyote in the neighborhood and that many pets and dogs were missing. This
report is being made so that the authorities will know the resident's
predicament.

300 block San Luis Rey/ Reports from neighbors:
San Miguel Dr. Attack on dog in backyard, owner was able to rescue
dog but dog required stitches on neck.
San Antonio Rd. Attack on dog in backyard, owner was able to rescue
dog, dog sustained neck injuries. Unknown animal killed (I saw coyote
enter backyard and 1 minute later heard the attack but did not witness
it).
San Luis Rey. Attempted attack on cat interrupted by person. Dog
killed in backyard approximately 1 month ago (Monty's dog). Another
attempted attack on cat interrupted by person.
300 block San Miguel/ Thanks for the Coyote alert. A few weeks ago,
I saw a coyote crossing the intersection of Santa Clara and Santa Anita
around 9 p.m. It didn't seem to be fearful of all the activity at the busy intersection!
To summarize, in one week of canvassing our neighborhood, these incidents
illustrate the severity of the problem. We respectfully ask the City
Council to address this issue on our behalf. We want to feel safe in our
"community of homes" while walking on our streets and enjoyng our
backyards. We look forward to a response from you.
